Research, in the traditional sense, results in a measurable outcome which makes a significant contribution to a discipline. St Mary’s values all types of research, which underpins our teaching excellence and personal development activity.

St Mary’s success in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise has enabled us to continue to focus on our key strengths in Sports Science, English Literature and Language and Theology and Philosophy. Emerging areas of research activity have since developed in Education and Leadership, History, Culture and Media which are contributing to our wider research base. Establishing research groups and centres offer opportunity for interdisciplinary work in a number of areas, including sport, health and wellbeing and spirituality.
