Where: St Mary's University, Twickenham When: Friday 1st May, 2015 Contact: For further information about the competition, go to www.debatingmatters.com. St Mary’s University, Twickenham will host the South Regional Final of the UK’s toughest debating competition, the Institute of Ideas Debating Matters Competition which is supported by primary funder the Wellcome Trust. In the run up to the election, should voting be made compulsory in the UK? Should physician assisted be legalised? And the UK liberalise its drug policy? These are three of the hot topics set to be debated by the South of England’s brightest and best 16-18 year olds from six different schools across the country. Challenging and critically engaging with these young firebrands are judging panels that would test a Prime Minister including: journalist at The Independent & Channel 4, Kunal Dutta; Rabbi at Maidenhead Synagogue, Dr Jonathan Romain; Chief Technology Officer at Transport Systems Catapult, Paul Zanelli; Chairman of Corporate and Financial Group at the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, Simon Thompson; and Justice of the Peace for Buckinghamshire Bench, Sarah McIntyre. The students will also be grilled by St Mary’s University’s very own Peter Smith, Director of Tourism & Tourism Management. The winning school progresses to represent the South region at the National Final held at the British Library between Friday 26th and Sunday 28th June 2015.
