Empathy and Literature

Date: Wednesday 7th December 2016 Time: 5.30pm; tea & coffee beginning 5pm Speaker: Miranda McKearney OBE, Founder of Empathy Lab Location: St Mary's University, Senior Common Room An exciting, building bank of neuroscience research shows that reading fiction can make us more empathetic in real life. EmpathyLab is a new organisation building on the implications of this research, and exploring how to build children’s empathy and literacy skills simultaneously. EmpathyLab is working with 11 pioneer primary schools on how to harness the power of stories to build empathy, and the power of empathy to make the world a better place. The schools are integrating empathy in their planning, re-focusing existing English work, and trailing programmes like Empathy Oscars. Miranda McKearney OBE is EmpathyLab’s founder, and will be sharing her vision and the practical implications of Empathy’s approach. This event is sponsored by the Student Psychology Society in cooperation with the St. Mary’s Psychology Programme. For more information please contact peary.brug@stmarys.ac.uk.
