Joseph Conrad book launch
Location: Senior Common Room, St Mary's University
Dr Kim Salmons will be celebrating the recent publication of her two monographs, Food in the Novels of Thomas Hardy: Production and Consumption and Food in the Novels of Joseph Conrad: Eating as Narrative. Both are published by Palgrave Macmillan.
The first title examines the role of food in the life and works of Thomas Hardy, analysing the social, political and historical context of references to meals, eating and food production during the nineteenth century. The second title moves the reader into the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Unique in its interdisciplinary approach to food, the work engages with sociological, historical, personal and literary perspectives. This, in turn, allows an interrogation of modern anxieties, embedded in cultural norms and values that can be interpreted through the way that food is prepared and eaten.
Dr Salmons completed her PhD on ‘Food in Modernist Literature’ at St Mary’s University (awarded by University of Surrey), and was supervised by Prof Allan Simmons and Prof Laurence Davies.
- 6-6.30pm: Drinks Reception
- 6.30-7pm: Introduction by Professor Karen Sanders, and discussion with Professor Allan Simmons
