Poland, Solidarity and the End of the Soviet Empire Abstract:
After a heroic contribution to the Second World War, Poland became one of few countries in history to be on the victorious side of a war, yet lose it's soverignty and territorial integrity. 45 years later they finally regained their freedom, with the help of the trade union Solidarność.
We have invited Denis MacShane, former journalist and Labour MP, who worked alongside Solidarność in the early 1980s, to talk about this historic fight for freedom and his impressions of Solidarność. We are sure that this will be an interesting and informative event for all, whether you are an expert on Polish history or if this description is the first time you've heard of Solidarność. We look forward to seeing you there.
There will be time, after the talk, for questions from the audience. Refreshments will be provided. The entry price will be 50p, which is payable on the door.
