This talk will be given by Dr Erin Saltman, Facebook and Carl Miller, Centre for the Analysis of Social Media (Demos) and author Death of the Gods.
Facebook is one of the tech giants changing our understanding of conversation, friendships and privacy. What problems do algorithms and online chats help us to solve? And what further dilemmas do they cause? Join two of the UK’s leading social media experts in a conversation about security, counterterrorism and digital engagement.

About the speakers
Carl Miller
Is a pioneering technology researcher and award-winning author who has thrown himself into some of the weirdest, least familiar parts of the digital age.
His first book, The Death of the Gods: The New Global Power Grab won the Transmission Prize 2019. It describes his journey to understand the new centres of power and powerlessness in the digital age, from politics and media, to business and warfare. It was published in August 2018 by Penguin RandomHouse.
In 2012 he co-founded the first The Centre for the Analysis of Social Media at Demos, the first UK think tank institute dedicated to studying the digital world. He's written for the Economist, Wired, New Scientist, the Sunday Times, the Telegraph and the BBC. He’s also a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London.
Erin Saltman
Dr Saltman is Facebook’s Policy Lead for Counterterrorism and Dangerous Organizations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Her background and expertise include processes of radicalization within a range of regional and socio-political contexts. Her research and publications have focused on the evolving nature of online extremism and terrorism, gender dynamics within violent extremist organizations and youth radicalization. She also manages Facebook’s work with the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT).
