Call for Papers

The Wisdom tradition extends way beyond the confines of Christianity itself. The one-day conference looks at this tradition, how it has interacted with Christianity and how it may be best appropriated for today’s world.

The day starts with an overview of the tradition in its philosophical and theological schools before turning to the role of wisdom in the tradition of the fine arts. The second part of the day has two focuses: on performance in theatre and dance, and on the relationship between wisdom and science, in particular physics.

This is the second such conference after the first successful one in 2018 held in collaboration with the English Province of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) and the ‘The Friends of Sophia’. As in our previous conference we welcome short papers from those who would like to contribute to the discussion on wisdom or reflect on particular art-works which (space permitting) they are welcome to display.

Each paper will be 20 minutes long with 10 minutes for questions and discussion. Please send your abstract (no more than 250 words) to peter.tyler@stmarys.ac.uk or dominic.white@english.op.org by 11th April 2019.

Although we will try to accommodate all requests to deliver papers we cannot guarantee this will be possible.

Registration

The day will run from 10am to 5pm and will include talks, workshops and plenary forum. It will cost £35 including a buffet lunch.

After theconference at 5.30pm there will be a special dance presentationgiven by Monos and Company.
