Careers and Work Experience Camp

In conjunction with Achieving for Children and AimHigher London.

As part of our University’s commitment to supporting young adults make the challenging decisions around career choices, we are very proud to invite aspiring 16 and 17-year-olds to attend our Careers and Work Experience Camp running during the week commencing Monday 1st July.

The camp will consist of the following:

Day one (Monday 1st July)

An initial Higher Education progression support day.

Days two-five (Tuesday to Friday)

A series of optional 'A day in the life of...' specialist graduate professional work experience and careers days. Each day undertakes highly specific work experience tasks, with an accompanying guest speaker relating to the specialist role. Students are given the opportunity to attend between two and four topic days as listed below.

This event is highly relevant to those trying to decide on pursuing certain specialist career pathways, while also contributing to potential vocational further education assessments and later stage completion of a UCAS statement.

All students that complete the camp will receive a certificate of attendance which can be subsequently used to enhance a CV, while also helping towards completing a possible University UCAS application.

Please complete the following event attendance application and parental consent form to request a place on the camp. For note, positions will be allocated on a first come, first served basis with attendance confirmation being confirmed by Friday 7th June 2019.

St Mary’s University will try to accommodate as many visitors as possible but please note that applications may be declined if the safe event capacity limited is reached.

St Mary's University Higher Education (HE) Progression Support Day
Day one

The day will include a well-structured series of workshops as follows:

  • Review and looking ahead workshop with our Careers Team, relating to visitors' Further Education courses.
  • Preparing for Higher education workshop with our Outreach Team, including a focus on sport and health-related UCAS statement writing
  • University life talk from our Students' Union and Student Services Teams, about University living and studying
Applied Physiologist
Days two-five

Biomechanics scientist
Days two-five

This highly specialist day will focus on assessing human motion, as one of the leading analytical tools of a biomechanics scientist. Visitors will collect, analyse and interpret functional movement data and then look at how this sporting industry practice can influence an athlete/coach looking to make improvements in performance. A background will be provided on how to use the appropriate technology, the scientific underpinning of this analytical technique while also exploring the process of how to develop a logical understanding of the results within a real world/functional context.

9.30-10am

Arrival to the R26 Biomechanics lab

10am-12pm

Video capture theory and applied tasks around Kinematics including looking at Knee valgus of three different motions – Squat, Single leg squat, Single leg drop landing.

12-1pm

Lunch

1-2.30pm

Analysis of collected data using Kinovea.Questions on data will include: What are the findings? What would be expected? What would this mean for a coach/athlete and would it influence training? Conceptual summary discussion including what other tests could be considered and how further data collection could influence athletic performance.

2.30-3pm

Guest speaker on pathway into being a Biomechanist.

This ‘A day in the life of a Psychologist’ provides an exciting opportunity to gain first-hand experience in a range of professions in Psychology, from academic and scientific research to the more applied fields of education and counselling psychology.

This will involve direct task-based experience from a selection of procedures including:

  • Computer-based cognitive experiments
  • Investigations of neuronal activity with an electroencephalogram (EEG) or transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)
  • Behavioural studies with eye tracking
  • Measurement of body movement in three-dimensional space with optoelectronic equipment
  • The creation and analysis of online surveys
