WADJDA (2019/2020 CREMCYA International Film Series)

Date:
Wednesday 12 February 2020
Time:
3.00pm - 6.00pm
Venue:
N44, St Mary's University, Twickenham

WADJDA is a 10-year-old girl living in a suburb of Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. Although she lives in a conservative world, Wadjda is fun-loving and entrepreneurial.

After an argument over a bike race with her friend Abdullah, a neighbourhood boy she shouldn't be playing with, Wadjda wants to have a bicycle, so she decides to try and raise the money. She enters a Koran recitation competition at her school and hopes to win enough money to buy her own bicycle.

Wadjda is the first feature-length film made by a female Saudi director.

The Centre for Research into the Education of Marginalised Children and Young Adults (CREMCYA) invites you to come and watch the film with us and then stay to discuss its rich themes, including gender, equality, and women rights.

This event is free to attend. Tea and biscuits will be served.
