The 2020 CBET lecture will be given by Dr Hannah Osborne.
In 2019 several US states passed laws that would drastically limit access to abortion, in some cases so severely that abortion would be effectively outlawed. This led to widespread protests, with many pro-abortion groups claiming that access to safe and legal abortion is a human right.
But what basis is there for this claim? Does this mean that abortion should be allowed under any circumstance, lest a woman's human rights are violated? Does this claim mean that the abortion debate is effectively closed? This lecture will discuss the arguments put forward for access to abortion as a human right and whether the rights of the foetus have any part to play in this debate.
Dr Hannah Osborne is doctor graduating from the University of Birmingham Medical School in 2016. She started speciality training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2019 following completion of the Masters in Bioethics and Medical Law from St Mary's University, Twickenham. She lives and works in Birmingham.
