Lord David Willetts has established a reputation as being one of the leading thinkers in British politics. After a career in the Treasury and in think tanks, Lord Willetts became a Member of Parliament in 1992. He then quickly became a minister and then, when the Conservative Party entered opposition, he was appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and then Shadow Secretary of State for Trade and Industry minister. Later, he became Shadow Secretary of State for Education and Skills.

When in government, Lord Willetts was responsible for developing the current system of student finance and university regulation.

After standing down as an MP, Lord Willetts was made a peer and has written a number of books whilst also being executive chair and then president of the Resolution Foundation. One particular concern is what might be called "inter-generational justice" on which his book "Pinch" focused. Another interest is the importance of continuing university expansion and the wide roles that university can play in economic and civic life and increasing the life chances of young people.

Lord Willetts will be interviewed by Philip Booth about these questions and others, with the main theme being his book “A University Education”. He will then answer questions from the audience.

The event is free to attend but places are limited owing to room capacity, please register to confirm your attendance.
