St Mary’s University Sport Symposium 2022

This symposium explores the research underpinning applied practice within sports coaching, leadership and analysis.

Symposium themes

Applied performance analysis

Studies of sport from a technical and tactical viewpoint (i.e., PA and data science) and research studying the use of such technologies within sport. Both primary investigations into PA and data with sport are encouraged as are research projects focusing on the way in which PA and data are used to support interdisciplinary teams, coaches and athletes / players.

Sports coaching process and practice

Studies related to coaching from a theoretical viewpoint within psychology, pedagogy and sociology are encouraged. Research with this theme will address the actions and behaviours of coaches as well as the contextual factors in which a coach operates.

Strategic leadership in sport

Studies related to leadership and management within sport are welcomed within this theme. Research projects focused on topics such as culture, strategy development and sport governance are welcome.

• High performance models, theories and behaviours
• Coaching, mentoring and leadership dynamics

Dr Mark Batey – Reader in Creativity and Innovation (Manchester Metropolitan University)

Dr Mark Batey is a thinker and practitioner in creativity and innovation, combining leading-edge academic insight, with international experience as a speaker, consultant, coach and facilitator.

Abstract submission

Structured abstract of 200-300 words on any of the three conference themes should be submitted to Claire.Mulvenna@stmarys.ac.uk by 12pm on Sunday 15th May.

We are keen that the symposium is as inclusive as possible and we would therefore especially welcome abstracts from scholars at all stages of their career, particularly those currently underrepresented in the field, including (but not limited to) Black, Asian and those from other minority ethnic communities, women, LGBTQ+, disabled, and neurodiverse academics.

Abstracts are invited for oral presentations, conventional print poster presentations and E-Posters.

Oral Presentation – 15 minutes (plus 5 min questions).

Conventional print poster – Size A0 – poster format portrait. A poster presentation is 3 minutes plus 2 minutes for questions. Posters will be displayed throughout the conference on boards and there will be a specific time allocated for the 3 min presentation and question and answer.

E-poster – PDF one slide poster – landscape. E-posters will be displayed throughout the conference however there will be no in-person presentation or question and answer session.
