A St Mary’s University Masterclass Day in Computer Science

We are excited to be hosting this fantastic opportunity for post-16 learners interested in studying computer science or related subjects at university! This event is also suitable for students currently studying Computer Science or IT related courses at sixth form or college.

The Computer Science degree at St Mary's emphasises the development of critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, preparing our graduates for success in a wide range of fields beyond computer science. Teaching on the programme is centred around active learning and engagement, with a focus on real-world applications and problem-solving. This event is the perfect opportunity for learners to experience what studying computer science at university could be like, helping them make an informed decision about their next steps.

Timetable

9.45am – Arrival and registration

10am – Welcome

10.15am – Session One: Artificial Intelligence

This session will introduce basic concepts and current trends in AI and how AI can shape our world. Attendees will also be introduced to some interesting AI tools that they can try.

11am – Session Two: Cyber Security

This session will introduce attendees to the current trends in Cyber Security and create an awareness of the risks and challenges faced by society. The session will be interactive, and attendees will have an opportunity to take part in a cybersecurity simulation.

11.45am – Campus Tour

12.15pm – Lunch

12.45pm – Session Three: Data Science

This session will introduce attendees to the different roles in the data field (e.g., data analyst, data scientist, and data engineer) and then take the attendees through a worked example of how we can gain insights from data.

1.30pm – Session Four: User Experience

This session will discuss the importance of the user and the user experience when developing technological solutions. Attendees will learn about some of the techniques that can be used to understand and create successful user experiences.

2.15pm – Any final questions
