Definition of Fixed-Term Hourly-Paid Academic Roles

Under the Role Definition Model (RDM), there are four distinct roles.

Module Convener

  • Grade: I, point 39
  • Reports to: Programme Director.

Hourly paid academic roles are intended to cover periods of short-term leave/absence and/or peaks of activity within the academic calendar.

This individual will lead a full module. It is the highest level of hourly paid academic post and will have responsibility for convening the module for the required period. The role will have line management responsibilities and feed into collegiate discussion on student engagement and module development. A module convenor is required to undertake St Mary's academic induction.


Associate Lecturer

  • Grade: I, point 34
  • Reports to: Module Convenor

Hourly paid academic roles are intended to cover periods of short-term leave/absence and/or peaks of activity within the academic calendar.

This role differs from a module convenor in that it will not take the lead in convening a module. Rather its remit is to ensuring a high quality learning experience by teaching on a module, as advised by the module convenor. This post will not line manage others, and will comply with rather than have responsibility for developing module handbooks, guidelines and teaching frameworks.


Facilitator

  • Grade: G, point 31
  • Reports to: Module Convenor

Hourly paid academic roles are intended to cover periods of short-term leave/absence and/or peaks of activity within the academic calendar.

A Facilitator will be engaged to deliver an individual learning experience i.e. workshops/ demonstrations, assessment of individual assignments or practical assessments. This role will not be used to deliver a lecture or seminar and will be under the overall charge of an academic staff member.


Link Tutor (unique to ETL)

  • Grade: G, point 31
  • Reports to: Head of Partnership

Unlike other hourly paid academic roles, this post is not in the main engaged to cover periods of short term leave/absence but is instead quite specialist. The purpose of this role is to facilitate and promote the student teacher's professional development in partnership with school mentors.

The blend of academic/non-academic responsibilities is unique. Post holders carry out much of their work in the community.


Tutor - Short Courses (unique to SAHPS)

  • Grade: G, point 31
  • Reports to: Faculty Business Manager / Head of School

The role of Tutor - Short Courses remains in the model temporarily for ease of reference, however it is noted that the requirements of this role can be of a non-academic nature.

The purpose of this role is to deliver short courses (non HE academic module).
