Eduroam is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community.

Eduroam allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain Internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions by simply opening their laptop. There are a large number of participating eduroam institutions across the UK.

Access to the eduroam wireless network requires that you understand and comply with St Mary’s University’s IT Acceptable Use Policy and the eduroam (UK) Policy.

Users with a St Mary's user account

When in an eduroam wireless network area, your Wireless Connection Settings will show an ‘eduroam’ network to connect to. Simply click ‘connect’ next to this network and when prompted for your details, please enter the following:

Username: Your St Mary’s Username followed by

  • (students)
  • (staff joining before Sept 2011)
  • (staff joining after Sept 2011)
  • (casual staff)

This will then redirect your authentication to St Mary’s when you are at another eduroam institution.

  • Password: Your St Mary’s password
  • Domain (if asked): Leave Blank

If you receive a security warning titled ‘The connection attempt could not be completed’, click Details and check that the Radius Server is ‘’ and the Root CA is ‘UTN-USERFirst-Hardware’ then click connect. You should never see this warning again after initial setup.

Once connected you should automatically re-authorise with the system any time you are in the vicinity of an eduroam wireless network either at St Mary’s or when visiting an eduroam enabled institution.

If you have trouble connecting to eduroam, please contact the computing helpdesk on x4061 or email

Users visiting St Mary's

If your home institution offers eduroam you should automatically connect to the wireless network. Visitors should note the following key points:

  • You must follow your home institution’s eduroam setup instructions. The setup instructions details on this site are for St Mary’s user account holders only and may not work for visiting users.
  • Please ensure your eduroam credentials work at your home institution before arriving at St Mary’s. This will aid any tech support you may require.
  • St Mary’s uses WPA2/AES encryption. If your home institution uses WPA/TKIP you will need to change this encryption to WPA2/AES whilst at St Mary’s.
  • Please abide by St Mary’s Acceptable Use Policy as well as those of JANET and your home organisation whilst using the service at St Mary’s.

If you have any trouble connecting to eduroam, please contact your home institution’s helpdesk first and ensuring you have the correct settings for your institution before contacting the St Mary's Helpdesk.
