Inaugural Drama Lecture Held at University College

St Mary’s University College, Twickenham recently hosted the inaugural lecture of Prof Trevor Walker, who explored the concept of Verbatim Theatre.

Earlier this week, St Mary’s University College, Twickenham, hosted the inaugural lecture of Prof Trevor Walker, Professor in Drama Education, who explored the concept of Verbatim Theatre. In Verbatim Theatre, the characters presented on stage are real people who act out, or describe real events in their own words. This storytelling technique has become increasingly popular over the past few years, both in the UK and abroad. During the evening, Prof Walker presented his lecture, ‘Verbatim Theatre: The Truth, The Whole Truth and Nothing Like the Truth’, which explored notions of authenticity, truth and stage-truth to ask why this should be? Prof Walker commented, “I have been touring verbatim shows across Europe for the past ten years and am aware of the appeal of this particular form of theatre. However, there are a number of problems with it, not least its claim to ‘authenticity.’
