Former University College Lecturer Wins Ironman Triathlon

A former lecturer at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham has beaten some of the biggest names in triathlon after winning the Ironman Asian-Pacific Championship which took place this Sunday 24^th March. The Ironman contest is arguably one of the toughest races on earth and sees competitors swim 2.4 miles, cycle 156 miles and run a full marathon. Corinne Abraham, who is in her second year of competing professionally, dominated the weekend’s race which took place in Melbourne, Australia. With a time of 8:10:55, she finished almost 16 minutes ahead of Dutchwoman Yvonne van Vlerken and 20 minutes ahead of Swiss defending champion Caroline Steffen. Corrine, a former Sports Science Lecturer, also receives regular physiological support from St Mary’s Centre for Health, Applied Sport and Exercise Science (CHASES) when in the UK. She recently said, “Working closely with the physiologists enables me to regularly update my programme and ensure that all of the effort that I am putting into training is to maximum effect.”
