St Mary’s Charity Builds Kitchen in Kenyan School Thanks to a Generous Donation

Strawberry Hill Overseas Community Concern (SHOCC), the charity of St Mary’s University College, Twickenham has built a kitchen for a school in a remote area of Kenya thanks to a generous donation. A donation to the charity of £2,750 has enabled SHOCC to continue its support of St Kevin’s School in Marigat, Northern Kenya. The school was opened in January this year with just a single classroom for 40 students, many of whom go all day without any food. The money has facilitated a new kitchen, which was built in just three months using local labour. The kitchen now provides children with a nutritious lunch every day, cooked by parents from the community. SHOCC supports a number of schools in Kenya, including nearby St Paul’s Primary School. Amongst other initiatives, SHOCC recently provided Fr Peter Kway, Marigat Catholic Parish Priest with a 1,000 litre plastic water tank to harvest rain water. The next phase in the project is to raise £6,000 to build a second room at St Kevin’s in what will, eventually, become an eight class school with around 300 pupils. If you would like to be involved in the school building project or to learn more about it, please contact SHOCC Trustee Dr Kevin Cook or visit the SHOCC JustGiving page
