St Mary’s Athlete Named British Senior Weightlifting Champion

An athlete from the Strength Club at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham has topped the podium at the British Senior Weightlifting Championships

An athlete from the Strength Club at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham has topped the podium at the British Senior Weightlifting Championships, which took place on Saturday 13th July in Bangor, Wales. Adam Mattiuissi has been named the 77kg British Senior Weightlifting Champion after competing in the 77kg category and lifting 125kg snatch and 146kg clean and jerk. Adam said, “I’d like to thank my coach Kazem Panjavi and the support from members of the Stars for the Future weightlifting team.” Fellow Strength club member Iain Shawley also competed on the day, securing personal bests in all lifts with 92kg snatch and 117kg clean and jerk. Iain commented, “Big thanks to everyone who has supported me in the lead up to this competition. I’m already looking forward to next year!” Alex Adams from St Mary’s Strength added, “Both athletes lifted fantastically over the course of the day. Adam opened well with a 120kg snatch and put the pressure on any close rivals with a 125kg third lift. Going into the clean and jerk, ahead by 13kg, he secured first place with a 146kg lift and set his sights on qualifying for the European U23’s after raising the bar by a huge 10kg. “Relative novice Iain Shawley, has shot up the ranks and continues to impress with his fast progress. Both his lifts ended in person bests, proving he is comfortable under the pressure of being surrounded by the top flight of British weightlifting. “Congratulations to both athletes and thanks to the support from our sponsors Sandy’s Fishmongers for helping to keep our athletes going strong.”
