Baroness Hale to Deliver St Mary’s Centre for Law and Culture Inaugural Lecture

The new Centre for Law and Culture at St Mary’s University, Twickenham will officially launch with an inaugural lecture, ‘Women in the Judiciary’ on Wednesday 11th June. Deputy President of The Supreme Court, The Rt Hon the Baroness Hale of Richmond, will lead the inaugural lecture. Having taught law at Manchester University while also qualifying as a practising barrister, Lady Hale became the first woman Justice of The Supreme Court in October 2009. Co-directed by St Mary’s Lecturers in Law Judith Bourne and Dr Thomas Giddens, the Centre for Law and Culture aims to encourage and engage research at the intersection(s) of law and culture, including not only various cultural products (such as film, literature and graphic fiction), but also cultures of legal practice. Dr Giddens said, “The topic of women in the judiciary is an important one in the broad focus of the Centre itself. Discussions around the role of women in legal culture, historically and contemporarily, is a topic of great significance in terms of equality and fairness, both within the legal system and how that system represents the society it regulates. “Personally, I’m excited to find out what Lady Hale will say on this issue from her unique perspective as the first and only female Lord of Appeal and (latterly) Justice of The Supreme Court.” The free public lecture will take place on June 11th in the Waldegrave Drawing Room from 6pm.
