On Friday 11th July, St Mary’s University, Twickenham will host a conference exploring the concept of fashion and how it relates to the media. Academics from St Mary’s School of Arts and Humanities and delegates from across the UK will attend the event called Subverting Fashion: Style Cultures, Fan Culture & the Fashion Industry. During the day they will explore appropriations of fashion and style as creativity, self-expression, collective identity and rebelliousness in media and culture, as well as questioning these approaches both within and outside the fashion industry. Some of the topics up for discussion include Styles’ got Style: Harry Styles, Fangirls and Gender (Helena Louise Dare-Edwards, University of East Anglia) and Glam Rock: Gender, Fashion and Pop-Modernism (Jon Hackett, St Mary’s University). The day is split into four panel sessions - Fashioning Fans; The Art of the Costume in Film and TV; Music, Gender and Fashion; and Style Cultures/Subcultures – and a poster display. The poster display can be viewed throughout the day with a question and answer session with the presenters at 1.20pm. The day starts at 9am with an expected finish at 6pm. Tickets can be bought from TicketSource for £70, or £60 if you are a PhD student.
