The School of Sport, Health and Applied Science (SHAS) at St Mary’s University, Twickenham have joined up with Twickenham Rowing Club to deliver a cancer recovery programme. Row2Health is an eight week introductory rowing course for people who are at least three months post cancer treatment. Health, Exercise and Physical Activity (HEPA) Lecturer Bernadette Dancy and Sports Coaching Science Programme Director Paul Dancy have been delivering workshops on topics such as how to exercise safely post cancer, goal setting and self-belief, and breast support advice. The initiative has also seen St Mary’s students get involved, including third year Health, Exercise and Physical Activity student Catie Sharrod who is also an avid rower for Molesey Boat Club. It is the second year the School has been involved with the programme and Bernadette said, “This partnership has provided a great opportunity to work with the local community as well helping us to communicate the importance of health and exercise, especially when recovering from a significant illness such as cancer.”
