Gold Medal for St Mary's Students at World University Championships

Students at St Mary’s University, Twickenham received Gold medals as part of the Great Britain Rugby Sevens Team at the 2014 World University Championships.

Sports Science undergraduate students at St Mary’s University, Twickenham have received Gold medals as part of the Great Britain Rugby Sevens Team at the 2014 World University Championships after winning 17 – 7 in the final match between Britain and Belgium. Jack Rossiter and Jack Walsh were both selected to represent Team GB during the Games which took place in Sao Jose Dos Campos, Brazil between Friday the 8th and Sunday 10th August. The team, who were training at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre with head coach Damian McGrath, flew out to Brazil to compete with 11 other nations over the weekend. Team GB beat Nambia, Canada and Japan in the group stages and their place in the final was secured by a narrow defeat against hosts Brazil which ended 12-10. Jack Rossiter, who is in his second year at St Mary’s, plays for the University team as well as Richmond, England U20 Counties and has previously competed in international events for Apache 7s. He said, “My expectations for the competition were to, at minimum, be in contention for a medal, and we surpassed that winning Gold.” Jack Rossiter gold trophy and Gold medal from World University Championships
