St Mary’s Academic to Host Joint Lecture at Luton Irish Forum

Dr Ivan Gibbons, Programme Director for St Mary’s University, Twickenham’s MA Irish Studies, will host joint lecture at the Luton Irish Forum, 4th November.

Dr Ivan Gibbons, Programme Director for St Mary’s University, Twickenham’s MA Irish Studies, will host a joint lecture with His Excellency Ambassador for Ireland Daniel Mulhall at the Luton Irish Forum on 4th November. The lecture, which will begin at 7.30pm, is titled “DECADE OF COMMEMORATION 'The 1916 Rising' Its Context and Legacy” and seeks to delve into Irish history. The Easter Uprising was an armed insurrection that took place in April 1916 in Dublin to end British rule in Ireland and is a pivotal event in modern Irish history. The two speakers will explore the background to the 1916 Rising in its wider context and the aftermath for citizens in both Britain and Ireland. After the lecture Ambassador Mulhall will discuss Irish Government plans for the 2016 commemorations and how the Government is proposing to engage the Diaspora in the programme. Dr Ivan Gibbons commented, “This is an opportunity to place the momentous events in Ireland in 1916 in the wider European context of the First World War and also to discuss how the significance of the Easter Rising should be commemorated a century later.” The discussion will be followed by a question and answer session chaired by Pauline Lavin, an MSc Event Management Graduate from the University of Ulster.
