A lecturer at St Mary’s University, Twickenham recently wrote an opinion piece for the leading teaching resource, Times Education Supplement (TES). Dr Jennifer Chung, who is a lecturer in Education and Social Science at St Mary’s, discussed education and teacher training in a piece entitled Until the government learns lessons from Pisa, we will not have a professionalised teaching force. It explores how the process of teacher training has become an important issue within the British education system and looks at how the British government can learn from the teacher training policies used in Finland, a country which continuously charts at the top end of the Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa) tables. Dr Chung has written widely on this topic for a number of years, and frequently gives papers at national and international conferences. She is currently working on a book entitled International League Tables in Education, PISA, and Student Performance: Why is Finland so Successful?, which is based on her doctoral dissertation. The book will be published by Symposium Books, in the Bristol Papers in Education series.
