An undergraduate student at St Mary’s University, Twickenham has seen success in recent international boxing tournaments for Great Britain.

A BSc Sports Science and BA Management Studies (now Business Management) student at St Mary’s University, Twickenham has seen success in recent international boxing tournaments for Great Britain. Joshua Buatsi, who competes in the 81KG Light Heavyweight classification, recently won the 59th Bocskai Memorial International Tournament in Debrecen, Hungary. On his way to the final, Joshua faced tough competition from Belarus and Mongolia, defeating both on Technical Knockout. In the final Joshua defeated the home favourite Norbet Harcsa, winning a unanimous points victory after three rounds. December also saw success for Joshua as he won a round robin tournament in Germany. In the tournament Joshua defeated Pavel Silyagin, Russia, and Elvis Hetemi, Germany, to claim victory. Looking ahead, Joshua is preparing to take part in the World Series of Boxing (WSB). The WSB gives boxers the chance to take part in bouts against the world’s best boxers whilst representing their national teams. Competing in the WSB, although harder at five rounds instead of three, gives Joshua an extra opportunity to earn vital points towards his selection hopes for 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Joshua said of his success, “The Bocskai Tournament was a great experience and featured some top countries. It was a big achievement for me to get on the podium, let alone win the gold medal. I’m really happy with what I have achieved so far and I thank God for all of the victories and helping me win my fights. The support from all of my family, coaches, and friends has been fantastic and I’m looking forward to competing in the World Series of Boxing.” To find out more about Joshua and his boxing career please click here to see an interview recorded in November 2014, following his triumph at the 44th Golden Gong Tournament in Macedonia.
