St Mary’s Strength Club saw success last weekend as they finished third in the British Student Weightlifting Championships, which were hosted in the Performance Education Centre, a world-class strength and conditioning lab, at St Mary’s University, Twickenham. The team entered 12 student lifters into the competition across seven classifications and collected four medals. In the over 105kg competition, Dan English took the gold medal, lifting 121kgs in the Snatch and 145kgs in the Clean and Jerk. Joe Westbrook also won the under 105kg competition, lifting 116kgs in the Snatch and 145kgs in the Clean and Jerk. Earlier in the day the team picked up two bronze medals as Austin Flood lifted a total of 210kgs in the under 69kg category and James Daley lifted a total of 250kgs in the under 94kg category. In the other categories, St Mary’s lifters put in strong performances in some very close contests. Head Coach of St Mary’s Strength Club Adam Mattiussi said, “We had a team of 12 compete this year, which is smaller than we have had in previous years, and everyone performed really well and did themselves and the university proud.”
