St Mary’s to Host Guest Lecture to Celebrate New Degree

The School of Arts and Humanities at St Mary’s University, Twickenham is to host the first in a series of lectures to mark the launch of the new BSc Criminology and Sociology degree on the 24^th April 2015. The lecture by The Times Crime Editor Sean O’Neill will discuss how the news media reports on crime. Criminology and Sociology Programme Director Dr Nic Groombridge said, “Many of us get our information about crime, punishment and the criminal justice system from the media: whether through vague memories of old cop or new ‘forensics’ shows or even prison comedies. The work of criminologists is sometimes to counter those views so I am particularly glad to welcome Sean as I know he takes a fair representation of these matters seriously.” The Criminology and Sociology programme, which will welcome its first cohort this September, has been designed as a contemporary degree and will prepare students for their chosen career path, whilst maintaining roots in classical sociology. Through a range of taught modules and opportunities for work placements, it will equip undergraduates with an understanding of key conceptual issues involved in the study of society, crime and criminal justice.
