USA Rugby Sevens Team Train at St Mary's

The USA Men’s Rugby Sevens team trained at St Mary’s University, Twickenham over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend ahead of the World Series tournaments.

The USA Men’s Rugby Sevens team trained at St Mary’s University, Twickenham over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend ahead of the World Series tournaments in Glasgow and Twickenham. During their training camp at St Mary’s, the USA 7s, who have several high profile players including the fastest man in rugby, Carlin Isles, were able to take advantage of the University’s world-class sports facilities, including the grass pitches and the Performance Education Centre (PEC), St Mary’s world class Strength and Conditioning Suite. The team also made use of the University’s hospitality services, which provided them with the best environment for elite team preparation. Several first and second year BSc Sport Rehabilitation students were also on hand to provide soft tissue recovery work for the players. The Eagles coaching team, led by former England Rugby 7’s Head Coach Mike Friday, said, “St Mary’s facilities are world class and we look forward to using them as much as possible in the future. The staff and the support mechanisms they have provided for our team are first class. All aspects of St Mary’s has helped us to create an elite training environment to prepare and develop our athletes for this all important final leg of the World Series.” Programme Director for the BSc Sport Rehabilitation programme Claire McLoughlin said, “This has been an amazing opportunity for our students to work with an international team in preparation for Olympic qualification in the last legs of the World Series. Opportunities like these allow our students to put into practise the skills that they have developed over the last year and this type of practical work experience enhances their employability.” Sports Facilities Manager, Tish Jayanetti added, “It was a pleasure to host the USA 7’s team in preparation for their forthcoming tournament and we wish them the best of luck on their journey to Rio 2016. We regularly host international teams at St Mary’s, the facilities and services available provide the perfect environment for elite performers. In September St Mary’s and The Lensbury Club, are a Team Base during the Rugby World Cup 2015 hosting New Zealand and South Africa.”
