St Mary's Awarded Grant to Stage 'Connecting Physics with Faith' Events

St Mary’s University, Twickenham has been awarded an Institute of Physics Public Engagement Grant to organise and deliver a series of events.

St Mary’s University, Twickenham has been awarded an Institute of Physics (IOP) Public Engagement Grant to organise and deliver a series of events on ‘Connecting Physics with Faith’ in local parishes and at St Mary’s campus in October, November and December 2015. The project aims to engage Christian communities in parishes with the cosmology and quantum physics concepts underlying creation and human consciousness. Programme Director for Applied Physics Elisabetta Canetta said, “We are very excited with this interdisciplinary project. It is a joint venture between the Applied Physics and Theology departments at St Mary’s, the South East Physics Network (SEPnet), IOP, and local parishes. It aims to enthuse the general public and young people over Physics and its relevance to our lives by using Faith as a familiar vehicle to explore the kaleidoscopic venues of Physics and Nature. This project follows into the steps of the Science and Religion workshop that was hosted at St Mary’s in May 2015 and falls under the umbrella of the Physics-Theology network that we are currently building at St Mary’s.” Three interactive workshops will be held at local parishes in October and November 2015, and at St Mary’s University in December 2015. The workshops will be delivered by physicists and theologians from St Mary’s University, and facilitated by the SEPnet Director for Outreach, to enable an engaging exploration of physics using faith as familiar concept for those less familiar with the science. They will comprise interactive talk delivered by physicists followed by a debate between physicists and theologians. For further information on attendance please contact Dr Elisabetta Canetta at: elisabetta.canetta@stmarys.ac.uk, on 020 8240 4095 or by visiting the Applied Physics website.
