St Mary's Alumnus Wins Gold at World Rowing Championships

St Mary’s University, Twickenham Alumnus Moe Sbihi won a Gold medal as part of Team GB’s Men’s Eight crew at the World Rowing Championships in France.

St Mary’s University, Twickenham Alumnus Moe Sbihi won a Gold medal as part of Team GB’s Men’s Eight crew at the World Rowing Championships, held in Lake Aiguebelette, France from the 30th August to 6th September. The crew competed against a host of top teams from around the world in their race, defeating second placed Germany by 0.18 seconds with a time of 5:36.18. The Netherlands claimed the Bronze medal with a time of 5:36.09. Elsewhere at the championships, Team GB saw a lots of success, claiming a total of 15 medals, including five Golds, to finish top of the medal table. Director of Sport St Mary’s Andrew Reid-Smith said, “Moe and the rest of the GB men’s eight produced an immense performance to hold off Germany and Netherlands. This win makes three successive World Gold medals for GB in this event and the boat has qualified to compete at Rio.” Moe, who studied a BSc Sport Science with Health, Nutrition and Exercise as part of a sports scholarship at St Mary’s, addressed the School of Sport, Health and Applied Science graduation ceremony in Westminster Cathedral. He was also part of the crew that won the Bronze medal in the Men’s Eight at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Moe also had a very successful 2014 season, winning Gold in the Men’s Four at both the World and European Rowing Championship.
