St Mary's Students Selected for World University Rugby Sevens Championships

Two students from St Mary’s University, Twickenham have been selected to represent Great Britain at the World University Games Rugby 7s tournament. The competition, now in its seventh edition, is being hosted in Swansea from the 6th to 9th July, with Team GB going into the competition as defending champion. Final year BSc Health and Exercise Science student Jak Rossiter will be competing in the competition for the second time, having won a Gold Medal in Brazil in 2014. Meanwhile, second year BA Physical and Sport Education student Samir Kharbouch will be competing for the first time. The Men’s Rugby Union team at St Mary’s has gone from strength to strength this year and have been shortlisted for the Club of the Year Award at the British University and College Sport (BUCS) annual awards. The club now has 180 members and have secured promotion to the South B league, having finished the season as champion of the South Eastern 1A league. Speaking to BUCS Jak said, ““I would love for us to be able to retain our title. It was an unbelievable feeling winning last time. Teamwork will be a key factor in having a chance at achieving that goal.” Vice President for Sport and Societies Hester Benham said, “It’s fantastic news for Jak and Samir, they’re up against some tough teams at the competition but we’ll be supporting them all the way. We’re all really proud of the work the Rugby Union club have put in this year and we can’t wait to hear if they’ve won Club of the Year at BUCS.”
