Drama St Mary's Alumni to Tour Canada

This Summer Dead Rabbits, a graduate theatre company formed at Drama St Mary’s will take their new show, The Dragon, to the Canadian International Theatre Festival in Edmonton. The play, adapted from a story of the same name by Jevgenji Shwartz, is a warning about misuse of political power - a tale about how democracy and freedom become fragile when skilful manipulation of truth, mediocrity, and violence are being justified by politicians who only seek profit and power. The play was written in 1950’s by a dissident writer, but carries a strong message in our seemingly ‘comfortable’ times. The company’s Artistic Director Kasia Zaremba-Byrne is Programme Director for Drama and Physical Theatre programmes at St Mary's University and the company is comprised of graduates from the BA and MA courses. Kasia said of the tour, “This festival is the biggest in North America with over 25000 people attending so this is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our work on an international stage – theatre has an important role to play in exploring difficult and complex political issues.” Academic Director for Drama Patsy Gilbert added, "Drama St Mary’s are thrilled to be supporting this work which takes our unique brand of Physical Theatre performance to international audiences. We can’t wait to see how the work is received in Canada.” Performance dates: 11th – 21st August. Specific performance times can be found at the Drama St Mary's website.
