Alumni of St Mary’s University, Twickenham Moe Sbihi MBE and Karen Bennett both won Gold for Team GB at the first regatta of the 2017 World Rowing Cup.

Held in Belgrade, Serbia, the regatta saw Team GB top the medal table, ahead of the Netherlands in second place. The competition, which takes place across three regattas, is used as a build up to the World Rowing Championships, held in Sarasota, USA in the autumn.

Multiple World Champion and Rio 2016 Gold Medallist Moe Sbihi continued his success with the Men’s Four at the competition. The crew finish over a second ahead of the Dutch boat to claim Gold in a time of 6:09.98.

Rio 2016 Olympic Silver Medallist and European Champion Karen Bennett competed in the Women’s Pair. Rowing in the Bow with Holly Norton in Stroke, she completed the 2km course in 07:11.29, finishing a second of the Silver medallist Dutch team.

“Great performances from the GB crews this weekend in Belgrade bodes well for the European Championship at the end of the month. Following on from their medal success in Rio, congratulations to Karen Bennett winning Gold in the women’s pair and Moe Sbihi for his Gold in the men’s four.” Andrew Reid-Smith, Director of Sport
