Health economics for public health

This module provides students with an understanding of the fundamental economic context within which healthcare is demanded, funded and provided, and within which economic evaluation takes place.

For students with no prior training in economics, this module also provides all the essential foundations in micro economic principles and applications required.

Dates and times

This course is delivered entirely online. Pre-recorded materials will be available a week in advance and will be complemented with live online seminars every Friday afternoon for an hour (1-2pm) for 12 weeks.

Seminar attendance is encouraged but it is at your discretion to attend live or watch the recorded seminars at your own time and pace.

In addition to the pre-recorded materials and live seminars students will need to study independently and prepare for the seminars if required. You will need to commit approximately 130 hours throughout the course.

The full cost is £833. The deposit cost is £50.

If you would like to take the course assessment to obtain 20 credits at level 7, there is an additional fee of £250.

Content

This course will introduce students to the ways in which microeconomics principles and concepts can be applied while analysing health care sector issues and problems; and provide an understanding of the economic behaviour of all agents involved in health and health care markets, e.g., patients, doctors, companies, and governments.

Assessment

The optional course assessment is two portfolios of exercises and a short and long answer unseen exam lasting about 3 hours.

Requirements

A minimum 2:2 honours degree (or equivalent) in a subject such as health promotion, public health, medicine, nursing or allied health, health-related studies (e.g., psychology, nutrition), social sciences, biosciences, sport science, and environmental health. 

Undergraduate degrees in other disciplines may also be considered.

We will also consider applicatns with two years of relevant non-certified learning and professional experience in a relevant field of work, such as relevant extracurricular activities or volunteer work.

International students should check our country-specific pages for equivalents. If English is not your first language you will need to achieve an IELTS score of 6.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in any section (or equivalent).

Award

Students will receive a certificate of attendance. Students who opt to take the assessment and pass will also receive transcript detailing 20 credits at Masters level. Please note that the transcript will follow once internal and external quality assurance processes have been completed.

Credits may be transferred onto existing masters degrees at St Mary’s University.
