This practical course focuses on both analogue and digital methods of working by learning how sound for theatre is physically produced, edited, and mastered as a finished design. By the end of the course, you will have a solid practical knowledge of how to use different pieces of equipment both analogue and digital and how to 'connect' all ancillary equipment and effectively troubleshoot problems.

This course will run from 10am-5pm over four days, across two weekends:
- Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st July
- Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th July.

Content
Weekend one focuses on working in an analogue way including sound propagation and acoustics, frequencies, bandwidth, filters, and clipping. You will learn about DI boxes, amplifiers, speakers, patch bays, microphones, polar patterns, and phantom power. You will cover signal change, how to send sound, monitors, sourcing, soundcards, and an introduction to Foley and the isolation booth.
Weekend two will introduce you to digital sound and you will use a digital console, learning about the menu functions, dynamics, and PFL. You will learn how to set levels on a digital console and how to use the onboard effects and route sound. You will use Dante, Ableton Live, and the Ableton Live 11 Suite. This will include editing, utilising software and plugins, exporting, aligning to a video, automation, and mastering iZotope RX10.
Requirements
All participants must be over 18 years of age to enrol.
Please note: There will be some working at height (basic training given).
Award
Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a certificate of attendance, issued by St Mary’s University.
