Joe Docherty OBE
Since September 2016 Joe has been International Director at St Mary’s University and is responsible for global recruitment, partnerships and exchanges.
Prior to this he held a similar role at the University of Portsmouth, which he joined in 2005. He led a large team delivering an international income stream of over £40 million per annum from global partnerships and overseas student fees. Major initiatives he was involved in included; the setting up of four overseas university offices in Shanghai, Beijing, Malaysia and India; the 2009 strategic alliance with the Australian Navitas group to operate a joint venture Pathway college (ICP) on Portsmouth’s UK campus; the 2012 signing of a collaborative agreement with the Government of Oman to construct and operate a new Military university in the Kingdom; and significant partnership agreements in China, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.
Prior to this he worked in the British Council/Foreign Office for twenty years; managing and directing the UK’s cultural, educational, aid administration and commercial English language and school examinations programmes in a range of overseas posts (including Colombia, Brazil, Sierra Leone, Israel, Pakistan, Iraq, Tunisia and South Africa). On home postings he was Personnel Director for the worldwide teaching and examinations cadre of the Council; he ran UN and World Bank scholarships programmes; and served as Deputy Director of Corporate Planning.
In the earlier part of Joe’s career he worked as an energy economist for the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority and was desk officer for Britain’s Tokyo and Washington D.C. nuclear offices.
He has an MA in Geography from St Andrews and an MSc in International Development from Bath. He was awarded the OBE in 1999. Joe’s non-professional interests include quizzing, philately, literature, popular music and foreign travel/languages.
