John Nugée has been a member of the Department of Business, Law, and Society since September 2019, and currently lectures in Politics and International Relations.
Outside St Mary’s John is an independent commentator and public speaker on financial, economic and political issues, with an extensive background in the official sector and over 25 years practical experience of training and capacity building in public sector finance. He writes a regular economic and geo-political blog at www.laburnum-consulting.co.uk.
Until October 2013 he was a Senior Managing Director of State Street Global Advisors (SSgA), Head of SSgA’s Official Institutions Group and a member of SSgA’s Senior Management Group. His responsibilities covered advising SSgA’s central bank, sovereign wealth fund and other official sector clients, and consultation on general public policy issues. During this period be was also an Associate Fellow of Chatham House in the International Economics directorate.
Before that he worked in official reserves management for central banks, including spells as the Executive Director in charge of reserves management at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, and as the Chief Manager of reserves management at the Bank of England. For 15 years (1990-2005) he was also a lecturer and technical adviser at the Bank of England’s Centre for Central Banking Studies.
He has also acted as a director of the European Investment Bank and European Investment Fund, an advisor to the European Commission’s Working Group of Technical Experts on Markets, a visiting lecturer at the New York Federal Reserve Bank and a senior lecturer at the Macro-Economic and Financial Management Institute of Africa (MEFMI). He is currently a senior advisor to the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum (OMFIF), and an advisor to a number of other government bodies and policy think-tanks both in the UK and overseas.
Outside the world of official finance John is a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Weavers, London’s oldest livery company, for whom he served as Upper Bailiff (ie Master) in 2015-16, a trustee of a number of pension funds and charitable foundations, and a keen trombone player..
