St Kevin's School
Just down the road from St Paul’s School, SHOCC’s first project in Kenya, is our latest school, St Kevin’s. On a visit in August 2012, SHOCC’s Kevin Cook stayed with Fr Peter Kway, the Parish Priest of Marigat. He invited Kevin to visit a new project in the Wei Wei irrigation area where he wanted to start a new school. The first classroom was under construction and the first students, infants, were due to join in January 2013. Plans are to continue to develop the classrooms so that, over the years, it becomes an eight form school taking children through the complete primary system. Kevin has guaranteed help from SHOCC.
Whilst they were walking around the school grounds, Fr Peter informed Kevin that he had not decided what to call the school. On returning to the UK, Kevin received an e-mail saying that, with his agreement, Fr Peter would like to call it St Kevin’s School. Kevin was delighted and will support the project as best he can.
On Monday 14th January 2013, Kevin recieved the following message from Fr Peter:
"We opened St Kevin's School today and registration of the pupils has started. The children will be aged between two and three and a half years! They will gradually move through the school, which will mean a new classroom each year. The most immediate challenge now that we have built the toilets, is to construct a kitchen and buy the necessary utensils so that we can provide a cooked lunch each day."
Kevin has asked Fr Peter to send photos of the school as it develops, which will be posted on this webpage. If there is a student teacher at St Mary’s who would like to spend some time at the school, this could easily be arranged. Please get in touch with Kevin directly by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Help with this project would be greatly appreciated. SHOCC has set up a Just Giving site so you can make donations.
St Paul's School
Kevin Cook visited Marigat in north east Kenya at Easter in 2012 to see how SHOCC funds were being used at St Paul’s School and to meet up with a group of scout leaders from Cleveland in the north of the UK.
Kevin was approached by the scout leaders in 2011 and asked whether he knew of a school that needed classrooms built. As a result, forty scouts and leaders will now be visiting Marigat in the summer of 2013 to build two new classrooms and a kitchen. They have raised all the funds for the project and Kevin hopes to be present when they are there. They will be continuing the good work on classroom building begun several years ago by SHOCC.
