Gemma Garrett – Careers Consultant Team Leader

At St Mary’s Monday to Friday

Gemma has been a Careers Consultant since August 2015. Gemma initially spent three years working as a Careers Consultant at Queen Mary University of London, where she specialised in working with PhD and post-doctoral researchers across all disciplines, as well undergraduate and Master’s students from a range of humanities programmes. In addition, she provided coaching to undergraduates and researchers as part of a consultancy-based work experience programme. Gemma moved to St Mary’s in September 2018.

Prior to becoming a Careers Consultant, Gemma spent over 10 years working in variety of communication-, education- and policy-based roles within professional bodies, including the Royal Society of Chemistry, Royal Society of Biology and the Biochemical Society. During this time she worked with extensively school students and teachers, undergraduates, postgraduates, early career researchers, senior academics and employers.

Gemma has an integrated Master’s degree in Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry from the University of Oxford and is currently completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Careers Information, Education and Guidance in Higher Education from the University of Warwick. 

Gemma is the Careers Consultant for the School of Humanities.


Vincent Potter – Careers Consultant

At St Mary’s Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays

Vinny has been a Careers consultant for more than 5 years. For the last 2 years he has been leading the careers provision at the Institute of Education, and has also worked at Queen Mary University of London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Vinny came to St Mary's after a varied career. After working as an Occupational Therapist within the NHS, he then moved to Pakistan and worked in health and development roles, as well as emergency relief work, teaching and project management. He then moved to Cameroon where he worked for an orphanage, the British Council and the British High Commission.

Vinny is the Careers Consultant for the School of Education, Leadership and Theology.


Joanna Pattison – Careers Consultant

At St Mary's Monday to Friday

Joanna has recently joined the Careers Service as a Careers Consultant. Previously, she worked in widening participation and improving access at the University of Leeds, where she led on outreach work with Further Education colleges in the Yorkshire and Humber region. She studied a BA in Chinese and Japanese at University of Leeds.

Joanna is the Careers Consultant for the Schools of Arts and Humanities and Sport, Health and Applied Science. 


Oby Oputa - Careers Consultant

At St Mary’s Monday to Friday

Oby comes with over 7 years’ experience in careers guidance and recruitment. He has worked for London College of Fashion (part of University Arts London) Prospects and A4e (welfare to work), supporting graduates, professionals and the long term unemployed into employment or change careers.

With an LLB degree in Law from Staffordshire University, Oby started his career in recruitment and account management before transitioning into the careers guidance sector. He is passionate about widening participation and supporting students develop their employability to achieve their potential.


Matthew Dennis – Careers Office Coordinator

At St Mary’s Monday to Friday

Matt joined the Career’s Service team in January 2017 and is the first point of contact for students, graduates and staff who wish to visit the service. He is also responsible for marketing and resources within the Careers Service.  Matt graduated from St Mary’s with a degree in Media Arts and was heavily involved in multiple extra-curricular projects during his time at the University.
