Yasmina Mallam-Hassam – Head of Employablity Services (She/Her)
Yasmina is the Head of Employability Services at St Mary’s, with responsibility for the Centre for Workplace Learning, the Placement Team and the Careers Service, as well as working with Faculties, Institutes and Departments to embed employability throughout the Student Experience. She has trained students on the Start Up St Mary’s entrepreneurship and Be SMART professional development programmes.
Yasmina has been a professional careers consultant for 19 years and before this she was a sales professional and consultant in the telecommunications industry. She is passionate about diversity and inclusion and is part of the BAME network at St Mary’s, and holds a CMI Level 6 qualification in Management and Leadership specialising in Diversity and Inclusion.
Gemma Garrett – Careers Consultant Team Leader (She/Her)
Gemma is the Careers Consultant for the Acting, Film and Humanities programmes at St Mary’s, including Creative and Professional Writing, English Literature, History and Liberal Arts.
She has worked as a Careers Consultant for 5 years, first at Queen Mary University of London and now at St Mary’s. Before that Gemma worked in a variety of communication, education and policy-based roles for professional bodies, including working closely with schools and universities across the UK.
Vincent Potter – Careers Consultant (He/Him)
Vinny is the Careers Consultant for Education, Teaching and Theology. He has worked as a Careers Consultant for over 10 years after a career spanning three continents in the Education and Health and Charity sectors, including working as an Occupational Therapist in the NHS, Disaster relief in Pakistan after the 2008 earthquake, a Teacher for the British Council and as a volunteer at an orphanage in Cameroon.
Vinny works at St Marys Wednesdays to Fridays.
Obi Oputa - Careers Consultant (He/Him)
Obi is the Careers Consultant for Business and Law, and has been a Careers Consultant for nearly 4 years, having worked at the University of Arts London before settling at St Mary's. His previous experience includes recruitment and account management. Obi holds an undergraduate degree in Law (LLB) and is currently studying towards a postgraduate degree in Careers Guidance in Higher Education.
He also co-chairs the AccessHE BAME forum and has a practice leadership in diversity and inclusion, particularly around issues relating to the BAME experience within higher education.
Matthew Dennis – Employability Services Coordinator (He/Him)
Matt joined the Employability Services team in January 2017 and is the first point of contact for students, graduates and staff who wish to visit the service. He is also responsible for marketing and resources within the Services and is the main administator for the Centre for Workplace Learning. Matt graduated from St Mary’s with a degree in Media Arts and was heavily involved in multiple extra-curricular projects during his time at the University. Femi Yusoof - Employer Engagement Lead (He/Him)
Femi joined St Mary's in August 2019 as the Employer Engagement Lead, after previously working as a Recruitment Manager within higher education. His role at St Mary's involves supporting students and the team with sourcing placements and internship job opportunities, engaging employers across the private, public, and not-for-profit sectors, including both large and small organisations. In addition, Femi organises job fairs and career talks.
Outside of work, Femi is an avid community volunteer, presently volunteering with Citizens Advice Bureau Reigate & Banstead, Croydon Voluntary Action, and Inspiring the Future.
Christopher Messenger - Graduate Outcomes Lead (He/Him)
Chris is the Graduate Outcomes Lead, promoting the annual Graduate Outcomes Survey to final year students and recent graduates as well as keeping in contact with and offering careers support to recent graduates from the university. He also organises the Start-up St Mary’s student enterprise programme.
He has worked at St Mary’s University for 3 years and before that in other Higher Education careers services in a range of roles.
