Subject knowledge enhancement courses

We provide subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) courses in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Spanish and Mathematics for individuals who have obtained a place on an Initital Teacher Training (ITT) course, but need to improve their subject knowledge before starting their training.

For further details and application forms for any of the below courses, please contact email ske@stmarys.ac.uk.

Mathematics

The Mathematics SKE course is aimed at those who have been offered a place on a postgraduate ITT course and who require subject knowledge enhancement. A team of experienced teacher practitioners with a wealth of expertise and experience working in secondary education will deliver the course.

This course focuses on aspects of Key Stage 4 of the National Curriculum, some core components of AS/A2 including the application modules Statistics and Mechanics

The course will encourage collaborative work and there will be some self-study time, working independently or in small groups on coursework set by the course tutors. Progress will be assessed throughout the course as well as by performance in the coursework assignments.

Spanish

The course is aimed at those who have been offered a place on a Secondary ITT programme for modern languages where completion of a Spanish subject knowledge enhancement programme forms part of their conditional offer.

The Spanish SKE course at St Mary's University is funded by the NCTL and participants will receive funding along with a bursary. The bursary for this programme is £1,600 which will be paid in monthly instalments.

We are delighted that the delivery of this course will include University tutors and an experienced Secondary School teacher from one of our outstanding partnership schools, ensuring that participants make the best possible progress.

The course content will focus on language for teaching Spanish confidently in Key Stage 3, but with some focus on teaching in KS4 where possible. Good practice in modern language teaching will be modelled throughout, providing a very good basis for participants about to embark on teacher training courses.

The eight week course will be full-time. In addition to direct teaching, there will be opportunities for collaborative work and some self-study time. Participants will be expected to complete a range of assessed tasks as directed by the tutor. Some online activity is an integral part of the course.
