Liberal Arts: English Major

Combine a study of English with a wide-ranging study of the Liberal Arts. Personalise your degree by choosing from a diverse range of English and Liberal Arts Modules. Study literature from the Renaissance to the present day, all within the vicinity of Horace Walpole’s Gothic mansion, Strawberry Hill House, which is located on our campus. The programme has traditional and rigorous modules covering: Tragedy, Critical Theory, Renaissance Literature (including Shakespeare), Romanticism and Modernism. The literary training provided ensures that you will cover the conventional ‘classics’ meticulously. There are also opportunities to take modules oriented towards developing career aspirations in the culture industries and education, ensuring that you are prepared for the world of work.

Year one

In the first year, you'll study three core modules from the Liberal Arts subject area and three modules of your own choosing from across a minimum of two subject study areas.

Year two

You will study two core Liberal Arts modules in the second year and select four optional modules. If you wish to follow the English major pathway you will need to choose a minimum of three English modules.

Year three

There is one core Liberal Arts module in the third year and you will need to select an additional four optional modules. If you wish to follow the English major pathway you will need to choose a minimum of three English modules.
