Clearing advice for parents

A guide to help you support your young person through the process.

We know that results day can be daunting - for students and their families. Whether your child didn’t quite get the grades they were hoping for, changed their mind about their university choice, or decided late in the process to apply, Clearing is a great opportunity to find a course they’ll love at St Mary’s.

If your young person is going through Clearing, your support and encouragement can really make a difference. Here’s how you can help.

What is Clearing?

Clearing is part of the UCAS application process, giving students the chance to apply for university courses that still have places available. This year, Clearing runs from results day (5 July).

Students might use Clearing if they:

  • Didn’t meet the conditions of their firm or insurance offer
  • Changed their mind about what or where they want to study
  • Didn’t receive any offers
  • Declined all their offers
  • Applied late (after 30 June).

We have lots of courses that will have Clearing spaces available, but keep in mind that the more popular ones will fill up earlier. If your child is set on the course they want to study, encourage them to get in touch as soon as their results are in.

Stay calm and supportive

Your child might be feeling disappointed or overwhelmed - that’s completely normal. Reassure them that thousands of students go to university through Clearing every year, and there is no judgement whatsoever around how students join St Mary’s – we’re just happy they’re here.

At St Mary’s, we welcome lots of students through Clearing who thrive in our safe, friendly, supportive community. You can see some of

Be involved, but let them lead

It’s tempting to take over, especially when time feels short - but this is their decision. Instead, help by:

  • Encouraging them to explore different options
  • Helping them prepare questions to ask universities
  • Listening to their concerns and offering practical help.

They’ll need their UCAS ID, results, personal statement, and Clearing number (from their UCAS Hub) ready before making any calls.

Research options together

Things to consider:

  • Does the course fit their interests and career goals?
  • What’s the teaching style like?
  • Is still available?
  • How far is it from home?
  • What are on offer?

Most of the will be open to Clearing – though the most popular ones will fill up quickly, so encourage your child to get in touch as soon as they have their results so we can secure a place for them.

We offer a limited guarantee of accommodation for students going through Clearing, along with and meetings with lecturers throughout the summer.

Encourage them to contact us directly

It can be nerve-wracking, but calling universities is often the quickest way to secure a Clearing place. On the call, they can:

  • Ask about available courses
  • Talk through their results
  • Get a feel for the university

At St Mary’s, our friendly team is here to help - no pressure, just honest advice. If a phone call is too much, we’re also available on WhatsApp (07360 545889) and via live chat.
