A guide to UCAS Clearing for international students
International students can use Clearing in the same way as UK applicants, with a few additional steps around visas and documentation.
Here's our guide to international Clearing.
What is UCAS Clearing?
is part of the UK university application process that allows students to apply for undergraduate courses with places remaining after the main UCAS deadlines. Clearing runs from early July until October each year and is open to both UK and international students.
Clearing is an opportunity to:
- Apply if you didn’t receive any offers
- Apply if you missed the UCAS deadline
- Change course or university if you’ve reconsidered your options
- Apply after receiving your final exam results
Is UCAS Clearing available to international students?
Yes. International, EU and overseas students are fully eligible to apply through UCAS Clearing if:
- You applied through UCAS but don't currently hold any offers
- You didn't meet the conditions of your original offer
- You applied after 30 June
- You achieved your grades but wish to change course or university
The Clearing process on UCAS Hub works the same for international and UK students.
For 2026, Clearing opens on 2 July and closes on 19 October. You can register your interest now, and we'll contact you when you receive your grades. If you're living outside of the UK, then you don’t need to wait for Clearing – you can

What is different for international students during Clearing?
While the application process itself is the same, international students should be aware of a few key differences:
1. Visa requirements
Most international students will need to apply for a UK . To do this, you must first accept an offer and receive a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from the university.
Visa processing times vary by country, which in some cases may take a few months, so it’s important to act quickly once you secure a place.
2. English language requirements
If English isn't your first language, you may need to provide:
- An approved English language test (e.g. IELTS or equivalent), or
- Evidence that you already meet the University’s English requirements
may have specific requirements. See our page for more details.
3. Earlier results dates
Many international qualifications release results earlier than UK A‑levels. For example:
- International Baccalaureate (IB)
- AP, SAT, other international qualifications
This may allow international students to secure a Clearing place earlier, although some courses may not advertise vacancies until UK results day in August.
4. International scholarships
Many international applicants may be eligible for one of our international scholarship schemes. Please visit our to check the available awards, eligibility criteria, scholarship amounts, and how to apply.
