Jean Améry and the Ageing Body
This colloquium features a discussion on the process of bodily ageing, in experiences of movement and limit. Drawing on her recent research on Jean Améry’s 1968 book On Aging: Revolt and Resignation, Prof. Ilit Ferber (Tel Aviv University) will explore Améry's phenomenological engagement with one of the most natural and inevitable processes, the process of getting old. Améry uniquely approaches aging from five different perspectives: time, body, social aging, culture, and the imminent approach of death. This lecture will focus on the second perspective: the aging body.
The presentation will be followed with Q&A, and a reflection by Maggie Doherty, Director of the Centre for the Art of Living and Dying Well. Drinks reception proceeds after the talk.
This event is supported by St Mary’s University, and is part of the Movement and Bodies Colloquium series, in partnership with Maison des Sciences de L’Homme, Paris Nord. It is open to all participants.
