Decolonising the primary science curriculum

Date: Wednesday 8 July 2026

Time: 4pm to 5pm

Venue: Online

Thea Bowman Research Centre - Inclusion, Wellbeing and Social Justice Theme.

We are pleased to invite you to a one‑hour online CPD session focused on adopting a decolonising lens in primary science teaching.

The 2025 Curriculum and Assessment Review’s recommends that within their science education “all young people are exposed to a wide range of perspectives that serve to broaden their horizons, rather than limiting them to narrow frames of reference based on their background”.

In response to this the St Mary’s University Primary Science Team are currently researching ‘What do qualified primary school teachers think of the outputs of Generative AI tools to support the decolonisation of the primary science curriculum?’

The session will be held at 4pm on Wednesday 8 July.

The session will comprise 2 parts:

Part 1 will be led by Danielle Oudomvilay, an experienced classroom teacher and subject leader. Danielle will share practical examples of classroom and whole school decolonial practices.

Part 2 has a focus on the use of producing teaching resources with a decolonial lens using Generative AI.

As part of our research, you will be invited to anonymously record your reflections on the quality of the Gen AI outputs.

Following this you will be sent the Teams link and further details about the session.
