St Mary’s Lecturer Furthers Contribution to Ottoman History

Dr Claire Norton from St Mary’s University College, Twickenham, has recently co-edited a volume entitled The Renaissance and The Ottoman World.

Dr Claire Norton, senior lecturer in History at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham, has recently co-edited a volume entitled The Renaissance and The Ottoman World, which will be released on Wednesday 9th October. Edited together with Prof Anna Contadini, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) University of London, the pair bring together some of the latest research on the cultural, intellectual and commercial interactions during the Renaissance between Western Europe and the Middle East, with particular reference to the Ottoman Empire. The publication is a collection of 14 articles, which contribute to an exciting cross-cultural and inter-disciplinary scholarly dialogue that explores elements of continuity and exchange between the two areas, and positions the Ottoman Empire as an integral element of the geo-political and cultural continuum within which the Renaissance evolved. The volume explores a range of topics including commercial, artistic and cultural contexts, (featuring Dr Norton’s piece Blurring the boundaries: intellectual and cultural interactions between the Eastern and Western: Christian and Muslim worlds), art and music as media for the transmission of intercultural influences, Renaissance thought. The Renaissance and The Ottoman World is available to pre-order through the Ashgate Publishing website.
