Emeritus Professor of Irish History, Ronan Fanning (University College, Dublin) is to be interviewed by Dr Ivan Gibbons during his forthcoming visit to the Centre of Irish Studies at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham later this month.
Prof Fanning, author of The Fatal Path (Faber, 2013) is the keynote speaker at the Centre for Irish Studies conference ‘Research Irish Modernities’, which is being held at the University College’s Strawberry Hill campus on Saturday 16th November.
His lecture, ‘The Role of Violence in Britain’s Irish Settlements of 1921’, is set to challenge some of the critical orthodoxies on the topic. Dr Ivan Gibbons, Director for St Mary’s MA Irish Studies course and himself a published historian specialising in the relationship between British politics and Ireland, is keen to explore the underlying ideas from the lecture in an exclusive interview. Excerpts of the interview will be available after the conference.
The lecture with Prof Fanning will begin at 1.30pm on Saturday 16th November and forms part of a half-day conference exploring Irish politics of the 1920s, literature and culture. It has been organised as part of the core programme for St Mary’s MA Irish Studies students, with papers presented by PhD students, but is also open to the wider community or anyone with an interest in Irish culture.
A limited number of places are available from £10 (concessions available). For more information and to book please contact Wendy Bushnell on wendy.bushnell@stmarys.ac.uk or call 020 8240 4249.
