The Centre for Bioethics and Emerging Technologies (CBET) at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham is hosting its first seminar of the academic year with a special guest lecture, taking place on Tuesday 15th October.
Entitled The Emperor’s New Genes: Are We Entering a New Eugenic Age? the event aims to address the issues regarding a new age of eugenics coming into existence, proposing questions such as “Is it appropriate to compare the present situation to the eugenic ideals that were widely supported at the beginning of the 20th century?” and “Are their lessons to be learned from the eugenic programmes of the past and if so are they relevant to the brave new world of genetic engineering?”
Professor Calum MacKellar, Director of Research at the Scottish Council for Human Bioethics and a visiting professor of CBET at St Mary's will be leading the discussion. His most recent book, Chimera's Children, prepared with CBET colleague Prof David Albert Jones, will also be available for purchase at the lecture.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information contact Dr Trevor Stammers, Programme Director in Bioethics and Medical Law at trevor.stammers@stmarys.ac.uk
