St Mary’s Hosts an Evening with Author Julia O’Faolain

The Centre for Irish Studies at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham, is hosting an evening with renowned author Julia O’Faolain on Wednesday 29th May.

The Centre for Irish Studies at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham, is hosting an evening with renowned Booker-nominated author Julia O’Faolain on Wednesday 29th May. Julia is one of Ireland’s best known and most talented female writers. She is author of the Booker-nominated No Country for Young Men (1980), along with six other novels and four collections of short stories. On the evening, which is free and open to members of the public, audience members will be able to enjoy an interview with O’Faolain, chaired by Anne Goudsmit, discussing her life, work and the business of writing a memoir.  There will also be a selection of short readings of Julia’s fiction by actors Jane Maud and Hannah Croft, along with a question and answer session and book signing of her memoir Trespassers, which was published in March by Faber & Faber. Born in London, O’Faolain was brought up in Cork and Dublin, educated in Paris and Rome, and has since lived through and written about some of the most important events of the twentieth century. Alongside a career as a translator, teacher and editor, O’Faolain writes not only about Ireland, Catholicism, history, the role of women and sexuality, but her subject matter is also truly cosmopolitan, reflecting the various places she has lived. The free public event, which is supported by Culture Ireland and the European Federation of Associations and Centre for Irish Studies (EFACIS), is being held at St Mary’s Strawberry Hill campus and will begin at 7pm.
